…just some of my beautifully unique ceramic tableware…
Helen Jackson is the creator of Hand Crafted Ceramics.
These beautiful ceramic pieces were hand crafted from a carefully compressed thin slab of high quality porcelain clay. It was cut out, formed and slumped into shape by hand. Underglaze colours were slipped onto the surface of the vessel to pattern it. After it was bisque-fired a clear glaze was applied over the top of the underglaze pattern. Then ensuing glost firing vitrified the porcelain making it impervious to water. The result is an seemingly delicate piece of ceramic art that is very durable. It does not chip easily, is food-safe, can be put in the dishwasher, and used in both conventional and microwave ovens. And it looks so pretty on a dressing table!
“I make vessels from increasingly thin slices of rolled out clay. The way gravity sometimes slumps the clay into almost organic forms is quite exquisite. The resultant flowing surfaces can be interesting on their own, but they are also perfect for decorating, and this has become my addiction. Vintage laces and brocades, stamps, natural found objects like leaves and sea shells, coloured slips and under-glazes; all are used in a myriad of unconventional ways to pattern the clay with texture and colour. An abundance of potential from what is essentially mud, transformed into everlasting pieces of apparently frail beauty, a beauty that belies its durability.”
